In the past few weeks, several companies, newspapers, and German football clubs – most notably Werder Bremen, The Guardian, and Target – have left the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), citing that it has become a “toxic media platform”. They are arguing that Elon Musk is misusing the platform for his own political interests, evidenced by his strong support for Trump in the recent U.S. presidential election and his subsequent appointment to oversee government spending in Trump’s upcoming administration. Additionally, the exodus is fueled by the disturbing content circulating on X, including far-right conspiracy theories and racist rhetoric. Another controversial factor is the platform’s algorithm, which has been programmed to prioritise Musk’s posts above all others – even those of U.S. President Biden.
How is this relevant for Corporate Political Responsibility (CPR)?
This situation illustrates how corporate actors can uphold democratic principles by distancing themselves from platforms perceived to undermine these values. By taking a stand, these companies and sports clubs are not only addressing ethical concerns but also encouraging a broader discussion about the role of companies in shaping the digital public sphere.
Furthermore, Werder Bremen was recently awarded the German Sustainability Prize for their initiatives empowering women and girls. This recognition highlights the club’s dedication to advancing equality and promoting inclusive values – principles that are at odds with the toxic and divisive environment that X has come to represent.
For German football clubs, the implications are significant. If major clubs such as Bayern Munich (10 million followers) or Borussia Dortmund (7 million followers) would also decide to leave X, it could send impactful signals across Germany and potentially inspire other sport clubs to follow suit.
Although the departure of a few football clubs, newspapers, or business may not immediately disrupt X’s operations, it sets a precedent. By distancing themselves from controversial figures like Musk and their politics, companies are making a clear stand in support of democracy and its values.
